Ron Mackay,
with Mike Bailey and Steve Adams

• Thorough coverage of the Division’s efforts during WWII
• Color artwork by Mike Bailey, an internationally respected aviation artist
The B-24 Liberator-equipped organization that evolved from its original 2nd Bomb Wing status to a
Divisional level commenced operations out of East Anglia in late 1942. Over the ensuing two-and-a-half
years it prosecuted the Daylight Bombing Offensive in company with its 1st and 3rd AD contemporaries.
Its crews moreover not only operated over central Europe, but in addition flew detachment operations
out of North Africa that included the specific and costly assault on the Ploesti oil complex. The title
of this book succinctly sums up the importance of the Division’s presence within the 8th Air Force
structure and the part it played in hammering the life out of the industrial and military infrastructures
sustaining Hitler’s Third Reich.
Ron Mackay’s interest in military aviation began during WWII. The local Coastal Command airfield
at his birthplace of Wick, in northern Scotland, provided a wealth of British and American designs
with which to stimulate his interest; postwar National Service with the RAF sustained that interest. A
working knowledge of German has further extended his field of study into the Luftwaffe. To date, he
has produced 25 books covering the aforementioned Allied and Axis Air Forces that include several
co-authored projects; a further number are in the process of completion.

• Revised edition of a classic aviation book
• Includes updated materials never before seen
• Authoritative book on the Lockheed Constellation
A revolutionary commercial propeller transport, the Lockheed Constellation burst on the aviation
scene in the early 1940s. Unheralded for the most part, due to wartime secrecy, it finally entered
commercial service in 1946, setting new standards for speed, range, reliability, and passenger comfort.
The “Connie” pioneered new flight paths in many parts of the globe, flying commercially for more than
thirty years, and undergoing countless modifications and upgrades during that time. They continued
to be utilized by the military as well, involved in a number of endeavors that remain shrouded in
secrecy to this day. The story of the remarkable and distinctive airplane and the people who made it
great, like Howard Hughes and Clarence “Kelly” Johnson, sheds light on the dynamics of technology,
politics, and society in the years 1940 to 1980. This new edition documents Constellations still flying
today, and an appendix with the Constellation’s operations manual.
