Tilley The authors worked at archives in France (23 total) and in Belgium, Canada, Germany, and the US (27 total) to access important NATO documents. Numerous archives in France, from Bordeaux to Metz, are located near sites of former US installations and therefore have documents not available elsewhere. Research took almost two decades. Data acquired enabled authors to compile more than 100 original tables. 29 subject-matter experts reviewed sections of manuscript; 14 were eminent military historians who together authored more than 50 books. Reviewers include three retired Army generals (four-star rank) and one former US ambassador. More than 400 veterans, family members, and French employees were interviewed. They shared recollections and documents from their service and experiences in France. This has enabled the authors to incorporate stories of the participants. Dwight D. Eisenhower, hero of the liberation of Europe, returned to Paris to command NATO forces. The US Army built a huge infrastructure across France to provide logistical support to the US Seventh Army in Germany during the Cold War. The US Air Force also sent aircraft to France to provide a nuclear deterrent to Soviet aggression. By 1962, the US military had 100,000 troops and family members living in France, and employed 22,000 French civilians. This monumental book is built on research in 50 international archives and more than 400 interviews. It is the definitive work on the postwar American military occupation of France and contains authoritative text along with original, professionally made maps, diagrams, and illustrations. M. David Egan , graduate of Lafayette College and MIT, is Distinguished Professor of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture, as well as professor emeritus at Clemson University. His seven architectural books are available in eight languages. From 1962 to 1964, he served with the US Army in France, where he commanded the 39th Ordnance Co. at Trois-Fontaines (Marne). D. Jean Egan , graduate of Louisiana State University, is an independent scholar. She edited five technical books for architects and engineers, published by McGraw-Hill and Wiley-Interscience.
