18 New and Forthcoming In high school, Taylor loved art and design classes so much that she went on to earn a college degree in interior design . Her studies included art, the history of architecture, kitchen and bathroom design, and how to design with color . She also took classes in business and marketing . In her favorite class she learned how to create computer-generated drawings and building plans . After college, Taylor worked in an interior design studio with many other talented men and women . They designed the interiors of lots of different kinds of buildings, from houses to hospitals . ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 9 CHAPTER THREE SCALED DRAWINGS Architectural drawings communicate Taylor’s decisions to the people remodeling the attic . Because you cannot fit a life-size drawing of a room on a piece of paper, you need to shrink it to fit . This is called scale, and it shows how the size of a drawn object relates to its actual size . Architectural scale is measured in feet and inches . If you imagine that 1 inch on the ruler is equal to 1 foot of a wall length, you are working in 1-inch scale . If each ½-inch on the ruler is equal to 1 foot of the wall length, you are working in ½-inch scale , and so on . This is a comparison of Taylor’s bathroom plan in ¼-inch scale and ½-inch scale . Can you see the difference in size? 24 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS CHAPTER FIVE COLOR One of the primary skills of an interior designer is understanding color! Colors inspire moods and create an atmosphere . Knowing how to select colors, values, tints, tones, and shades is key to creating the mood and inspiring the feelings you want in the spaces you design . To understand color, you need to know a few terms and definitions: Hue is the word that describes pure color . The three primary colors and three secondary colors on the color wheel are all hues . The primary colors on the wheel are red, blue, and yellow . Because they are not combinations of any other colors, they are the purest hues. Pure hues are often used for children’s spaces, fast-food restaurants, and places intended to be bright and cheerful . In homes, offices, hotels, and medical facilities, hues are most often toned down to make spaces feel comfortable or soothing . ACKNOWLEDGMENTS 33 Country-style homes are popular all over the world, with regional details added . You may have heard of French Country, English Country, Southern Country, and even Early American Country . They incorporate elements of nature inside and out, with natural stone, rustic wood, and big front porches . The furniture in a Country-style house can be snuggly and soft with a variety of textures . There are many more architectural styles, such as Midcentury Modern, Craftsman, Farmhouse, and Cape Cod, to name a few . And there are styles from around the world, such as Spanish, Greek Revival, French Country, and English Tudor . There are styles from many eras in history: Colonial, Victorian, Gothic, Italianate, and many more . 32 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The Future Interior Designer’s Handbook Jana Rosenblatt The only book for 8-to-12-year-olds that explains the role, techniques, and skills of a professional interior designer Exciting lessons and drawing techniques for middle-graders who are aspiring artists or interior designers The perfect child’s introduction to interior design, revealing why building interiors look and function as they do Budding interior designers are encouraged to unleash their creativity in this book that shows them everything they need to know about the exciting world of interior design.
